Understanding Your Self Worth

Have you ever wondered if you are good enough?

Or if you are loved by people who can be either your family or friends.

Have you?

Yes right? Good job. That means at a point in your life you have considered what your worth as a person is. Your self-worth is the internal sense of being good enough and worthy of love and belonging from others according to the definition of the university of North Carolina Wilmington.

Understanding your self-worth, you should know that you can either have low or high self-worth. Your self-worth should never be determined by external factors such as successes, achievements, accomplishments, wealth, love etc. It should be determined by how you view yourself internally with or without all the great things you have going on with you

For you to understand your self-worth, let us answer a few questions, shall we?

  • Do you ever think that you are not good enough without achievements and successes?
  • Are you quick to criticize yourself whenever you make a mistake?
  • How much do you like, respect, and value yourself?
  • Which words would you use to describe yourself to a stranger?
  • When you self-reflect and think about yourself, are your thoughts generally positive, negative, or somewhere in between?
  • Do you believe you are worthy of others’ love, respect, and consideration?

So, how did you do?

Did you think you are valuable or not?

If you do negatively perceive yourself, don't beat yourself up about it. There are various ways you can build your self-worth but I will like to share two

  • Focus on doing things you are good at and also enjoy because it reminds you of how capable and great you are.
  • Also, you should always challenge every negative thought( it should not define you).

Having high self-worth will help you have a functional relationship with people. You will be able to create healthy boundaries regarding how people treat you. It is not okay to be treated anyhow just because you want people to like or accept you. Your weaknesses should not be your identity, focus more on your strengths and abilities.

Remember: " People tend to treat others the way they perceive/treat themselves".

Do you understand the concept of self-worth now?

Do you think having high self-worth is important and why do you think so?
