ANTISOCIAL PERSONALITY DISORDER

People with Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) show tendencies (which may be violent) that put people in a bad spot. It is a mental condition where the person deliberately manipulates, exploits or violates their victims without any form of remorse. Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a condition characterized by a lack of empathy and indifference to people’s feelings.

Features of antisocial personality disorder
You can identify some of these features in individuals diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder:
- Insensitivity to people’s feelings
- Taking advantage of perceived vulnerable people for personal gratification.
- Manipulation of situations to favor their preferred outcome
- Aggressiveness towards people.
- Indulging in criminal and life-threatening activities with no regard for themselves or others.
- Lying at the expense of others.
- Having no remorse for hurting their victims.
- Unreasonably opinionated and egoistical.

What causes a person to become antisocial?
How people think, view or understand people differs, and this is largely influenced by their experiences. The cause of ASPD is not exactly known but personalities can be birthed from life experiences, circumstances or inherited genes. Individuals with antisocial personality disorder may have gone through seasons of neglect, abuse, and inhumane degradations.

Other factors that may cause Antisocial Personality Disorder are:
- Exposure to an unhealthy, violent lifestyle as a child.
- A medical history of a mental condition in the family.
- Willful desires to cause harm to themselves or others.

Some resulting problems in individuals with antisocial personality disorder include:
- Alcohol and drug abuse.
- Suicidal thoughts or desires to cause harm to others.
- Indulging in criminal activities that may lead to jail time or in worse cases, death.
- Financial, health, social or educational challenges which may lead to other mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, ADHD, etc.
- Child or spousal abuse, neglect or maltreatment.

Intervention strategies
Diagnosing someone with antisocial personality disorder requires a mental health expert, as the disorder develops over time, sometimes from adolescence.

Therefore, if you have noticed someone around you showing some of the features listed above, it is important to recommend seeking professional help to manage the disorder and the problems that are often associated.
