WHO- Africa's Diabetes Cases May Surge To 54 Million By 2045
In a message to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2024, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti that the number of people living with diabetes in the African region is projected to rise to 54 million by 2045. She noted this number marks the highest predicted increase globally if urgent action is not taken. Moeti further explained that the rising prevalence of diabetes in Africa is driven by factors such as urbanisation, unhealthy diets, and lack of physical activity.

WHO Calls On G20 Leaders To Support Access To HPV vaccines For Girls Around The World
To mark the global “Cervical Cancer Elimination Day of Action,” on 17th November 2024, iconic landmarks were lit up in teal. This included Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer monument, which welcomed world leaders to the G20 Summit. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, noted that the availability of powerful HPV vaccines, diagnostics for early detection and treatment for those infected, cervical cancer could become the first cancer to be eliminated. The DG urged G20 leaders to support access to vaccines for girls in all countries.

Lagos State Government Extends Hypertension, Diabetes Screening till 24th November 2024
The extension was announced by the state's commissioner for health, Professor Akin Abayomi. The commissioner explained that the extension was announced in a bid to allow more Lagosians benefit from the initiative. The initiative, tagged: “Know Your Numbers, Control Your Numbers,” started on 28 October and is targeting 800,000 residents across the state.
