A common misconception is that you cannot get an STD from giving or receiving oral sex. This is not true. Gonorrhea and herpes are commonly transmitted through oral sex.
It is possible to get Herpes through kissing, but with most STDs, the chances are pretty slim.

Dental dams are thin squares of latex or polyurethane that people can lay down on top of a vulva or an anus to create a barrier for oral sex.

To minimize the risk of STI transmission, a person should wear a condom during anal sex. He/she should also pay attention to the type of lubricant they use, as oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly can damage latex condoms. Water-based lubricants are safer to use with condoms.
