WHO Director-General declares the recent upsurge of Mpox an international health concern
Following a meeting with International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR or Regulations) Emergency Committee on the 14th of August, the WHO DG, Dr Tedros, has declared the upsurge of the new clade of Mpox a public health concern. The IHR Emergency Committee advised that the upsurge be declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

New study shows cancer drug may treat early-stage Alzheimer's
A group of researchers from the Pennsylvania State University, Stanford University and a team of international collaborators have published findings, on August 22, 2024, to show that blocking a specific enzyme called indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) could rescue memory and brain function in models that mimic Alzheimer's disease. IDO1 inhibitor drugs have been developed to treat many types of cancer, including leukemia and breast cancer.

Stakeholders link rise in cases of sudden death from uncontrolled hypertension on high salt intake
At a press briefing titled "Bouillion fortification: public health versus profit," held on Thursday, August 22nd, a group of stakeholders under the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), Network for Health Equity and Development (NHED) have lamented the rise in slump attacks, amongst Nigerians as a result of the country's present salt intake reaching an average of 10 grams daily. The stakeholders have also called for the immediate discontinuation of plans for bouillon as a food vehicle fortification with the argument that fortification would put Nigerians at risk of higher food intake.
